Lee Cummings on Why Self-Deception is the Worst Kind of Deception
Lee Cummings is back and this week, we're talking about why self-deception is the worst kind of deception, why fear is a vacuum to suffocate our potential, and why facts and truth aren't the same thing. You see, the greatest challenge you and I face, according to Lee, is staying awake in this present cultural moment of chaos. And so if the enemy can’t lull you into spiritual apathy, deception is often his weapon of choice against you. And if he can deceive you, he can keep you from living out your purpose-God’s purpose for your life. That's where we're headed today with Lee. He's a trusted voice in my life and I'm thankful to share this conversation with you today.

I enjoyed this one. Here are some things that stood out to me: 1. He shared about how in the past he had experienced anxiety and that it came on suddenly and that he ended up seeing a counselor to go deeper into what was going on. That's so similar to my story.😮 About six months ago, I started having anxiety. At that time, life was challenging with work, church and family stressors. It just seemed like everywhere I looked ... struggle. So I started seeing a counselor to try to figure out what was going on. A funny thing is that in the first session he said a couple of things that were good. "You're normal." was one of them. In the sessions that have followed I can see that this time of counseling for me is like a tune-up for a car. It's time to talk about things people have said and done, name my emotions about those experiences, forgive and move on... or dig deeper. It's also true that I need help peeling back the layers. An outside perspective is SUPER helpful. Sometimes I feel angry. But the true emotions are harder to get at. I'm learning more about why some people tend to "trigger" me. 2. We are living in a time where absolute truth is seen as. .. (pick your adj...) And yet, there's no way I could navigate my current season without it. That part about truth and fact.🤯 3. I liked how you finished this chat by talking about prayer and discernment. And how our prayer life changes as we age. Prayer helps me to see that when I don't feel hopeful or peaceful, God can supply. But I need to tell Him all the things first. It's in prayer that I can get clarity on the things in my heart and mind. Thanks for sharing this!😊

SO much truth!! My husband was cheating on me with the church for our 30yr marriage! He was a pastor! He now lives with a woman from our last church! She was one of many of his groupies in various churches over 25 yrs of ministry. Blatantly flirting with the ladies, in the name of being a "good pastor".... He is presently a mortician. He is somewhat estranged to our 3 children, their spouses, and 5 grands. He can't even look me in the eye! He's full of bitterness and hate. Bitterness that he lost the love of his life HIS job! I didn't know where to turn over the yrs. It was our livelihood! I had three mouths to feed. We were conditioned to keep quiet about home life! I finally had the nerve to set some boundaries and express the need for change once our kids married and moved out on their own! He cracked.... The mask fell. He is finally his true self! I pray for him and his gf. We are all hurting, healing souls in desperate need of a saviour....

Steve Carter is a con. He’s used the Willow creek drama to self promote for years. He was a so so pastor at Willow who was entrusted with more than he could handle. He’s used this story, which is largely unfounded, to build a platform for himself. He has no motivation to “heal” or move on from grief. This is how he makes bank. It’s old and disgusting.

The journey. Recently while praying I felt Him say, "Enjoy the journey." Definitely not my normal way of doing things. In the past month I've gotten hit hard with anxiety. And the exhaustion has been physical as well as emotional. And yet, I'm learning to be curious. Not, "why is this happening to me?" but learning to be curious. To ask questions. As recent as a month ago my tendency was to feel weak when facing more complicated emotions. And yet in the past week, I've tried to be more curious, not just annoyed by whatever is happening right now.😂 I like things logical... but my experience is that the spiritual is rarely logical. Often the spiritual attacks blindside me. 'Why is my mind like this?" "Why is my brain choosing to turn off/shut down?" It's hard when there are no answers in the moment. Waiting and resting are hard when you're a doer like me.🙂 Thanks for sharing this conversation.❤

I'd like to share some thoughts. This conversation was enlightening. Grief is a funny thing. As I was watching this one friendship came to mind almost from the start. I realize that some of the anxiety I have been feeling recently is that I haven't greived that relationship. It is interesting to see that some of my current behavior stems from not wanting to be like that person.🤔 Not healthy either... Hope. I have never been a person with hope, joy yes...but hope has always been harder for me. I'm more of a "waiting for the other shoe to drop" kind of person. But in the past month, the Holy Spirit has been bringing this word to mind a lot. I feel like He wants to see that hope is important. And that if I want to be more emotionally healthy, that needs to be a bigger part of my life. Change is not easy. I believe that God is good... and that often He asks me to do things that feel hard.😅 As your guest was talking about hope, I was struck by how like faith and love it's a verb. It's something that I can choose to have more of in my life. Thanks for sharing this.❤

This one blessed me.🥰 Recently I have had a lot of anxiety. It seemed to come on suddenly and with a vengeance (not something that has been an issue before). As I pray on it, He is quiet. I feel that as I listened to this He showed me a few things. 1. Focus. If I focus on what I don't have, that's all I will see. But if I choose to live with open hands, that He will provide. 2. What makes me sad? What thing has He put on my heart that He wants me to partner with Him in? As soon as you guys talked about that something came to mind.😅 It confirmed some things that have happened recently that made no sense to me. 3. Hope. Choosing to be hopeful is a choice. I can choose to believe that good things will happen. I struggle with negative thoughts and overthinking so this is a good challenge for me.💪 4. What gifts has He put in me that I can use to bless others? Recently I have been growing in the prophetic. My tendancy is to let others speak before I do. There was a situation recently where I felt Him say something to me that He wanted me to share but I didn't because it felt "out of context". And as I was praying and thinking on it last night I felt Him ask me why I chose not to say anything. Lol, I feel like Gideon. Given a task, but asking God, "Was that really from you?" 5. Rest. With the anxiety I have been feeling exhausted and have been resting more. It can feel frustrating when my body wants to rest and my mind is racing. And yet I feel that there's something that my body knows that my mind doesn't. Rest is good for the mind and body. Thanks for sharing this.❤️

This is the true meaning of "the fear of death" in the bible. If you asked the Lord to unpack/explain "death", He will say it is ultimate weakness and ultimate failure. Fear of being alone, fear of being left out, fear of being misunderstood, fear of failure. But Jesus has conquered death. When we follow him by faith in His strength, He leads us through the valley of the shadow of death and brings us face to face with fear/the enemy's lying voice and here he fills our cup so that it overflows. We learn the depth of His love and the ultimate safety of His presence, our life hidden with Christ in God. Then we move through death to life, following Jesus into resurrection, promise which is identity now in power.. Think Jesus after the wilderness! God is doing this in my life. Delivered me from complaining, unbelief, bitterness and all the lies the enemy used on me for over 20 years. Praise God. He is good and His faithful love endures forever. That's a verse that is now written in my heart:) He is so good. God bless you guys. I love this content!

Love that point about looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter. I hear so many voices, sermons, christians, myself included in the past playing into the idea that we have to drum up this mountain of faith to achieve or "buy" the promises of God. But that's so false, we are not orphans on our own trying to muster up our faith. We are looking to the faithful one, the alpha and omega, feeding on His faithfulness. He begins our journey and completes it in His strength for His glory. Praise God!
